Reasons for tooth extraction
- Destruction of the crown of the tooth by caries, which cannot be restored.
- Advanced forms of periodontal disease, accompanied by significant tooth mobility.
- Incorrect tooth position, injuring the oral mucosa or adjacent teeth.
- Complications that have arisen after endodontic treatment (root canal treatment).
- The presence of supernumerary teeth that disrupt the bite and cause discomfort.
- Tumors and cysts of the jaws, requiring the extraction of teeth in the affected area.
- Mechanical injuries that have led to a fracture of the tooth root, which cannot be restored.
- Orthodontic indications associated with the need to create space for the movement of other teeth.
If you require a tooth extraction, our dentists will perform the procedure in a painless and comfortable manner.
To restore an extracted tooth, we can offer you dental implants.
How is a tooth extracted at our Fairfax dental office?
Tooth extractions typically use local anesthesia to numb the area around the tooth. In complex cases or if the patient is very anxious, sedation or general anesthesia may be used. The choice of anesthesia depends on the individual and the complexity of the procedure.
Extraction procedures vary. In simple cases, the tooth is gently loosened and removed with forceps and elevators. In complex cases, especially with impacted or displaced teeth, it may be necessary to incise the gum, remove the bone, and separate the tooth into pieces.
After the tooth is extracted, the socket is treated, removing any remaining tooth, bone fragments, and granulation tissue. Sometimes, bone grafting material is placed in the socket to stimulate bone growth, especially before implantation.
Finally, the gum is sutured to close the wound and stop bleeding. The patient is provided with instructions on oral care after the extraction, including recommendations on pain relief, nutrition and hygiene to prevent complications and ensure rapid healing.

After Tooth Extraction
- Blood clot: Immediately after extraction, apply pressure with a sterile swab to the socket for 30-45 minutes. If bleeding does not stop, change the swab and repeat. It is important to preserve the clot.
- Clot protection: Avoid gargling, straws, smoking, drinking alcohol, and brushing teeth near the socket for 3 days. Limit physical activity for 24 hours.
- Swelling and pain: Apply ice to the cheek, take painkillers as prescribed by your doctor. Swelling usually subsides within 48 hours. If painkillers do not help, contact the clinic.
- Antibiotics: If prescribed, take the full course.
- Diet: On the day of extraction, eat soft foods and drink plenty of fluids. Gradually return to your normal diet.
- Hygiene: Resume brushing and flossing (except in the extraction area) after 24 hours.
- When to call the doctor: If you have heavy bleeding, severe pain, swelling that doesn’t go away after 2-3 days, or an allergy to medications.
