What’s pediatric dentistry?
Pediatric dentistry is aimed at maintaining dental health and developing a positive attitude towards dental treatment in the youngest patients. After all, it is in childhood that the foundation for a healthy smile for life is laid. Therefore, it is very important to find a good pediatric dentist for your children.
A pediatric dentist at Fairfax Family Dental is not just a doctor who treats children’s teeth. This is a specialist who has knowledge of child psychology, the peculiarities of the development of the dental system in childhood and knows how to find an approach to the smallest and most anxious patients. Our doctors use special techniques and equipment adapted for children to make a visit to the dentist as comfortable and painless as possible.
When do we recommend that children see a dentist?
In most cases, Fairfax Dentist recommends the first visit within six months of the first tooth emerging, or no later than the child’s first birthday. This early visit allows the dentist to evaluate the overall health of the mouth, check for signs of decay or other problems, and give parents tips on how to properly care for their child’s teeth.
Early visits to the dentist are also important for establishing a positive attitude toward dental procedures. Introducing a child to the dental office at an early age can help reduce anxiety and fear, making future visits easier. The dentist can use playful methods and explain procedures in simple, understandable language to create a comfortable and friendly environment.
Even if your child has healthy teeth, regular dental visits and good oral hygiene are essential. They teach your child to care for their teeth from an early age.

Take care of your baby’s teeth at home
Even before the first tooth appears, it is important to take care of your baby’s gums. After each feeding, gently wipe the gums with a soft, damp cloth or gauze pad. This removes any milk or formula residue, prevents bacteria from growing, and prepares your baby for the feeling of a toothbrush in the future. The movements should be soft and gentle, without applying strong pressure.
When the first tooth appears, it is time to move on to a toothbrush. Choose a toothbrush with soft bristles and a small head, designed specifically for babies.
At about two years of age, you can begin to teach your child to brush his teeth independently, but under your close supervision. Show him the correct movements, tell him how important it is to brush each tooth from all sides. Use a children’s toothpaste with fluoride (the size of a pea) and make sure that the child spits it out and does not swallow it.
Remember that children under 6-7 years of age do not have sufficient motor skills to brush their teeth effectively, so after brushing your teeth yourself, be sure to finish brushing your teeth.
